pon initially being asked to do a write up for
the XCOM mag, I declined; mainly because
I’ve never played any of the games, but also
because the game has never really appealed to me.
But after that, I was surrounded by the internet
pissing themselves like an excited dog by the new
XCOM: Enemy Within. With constantly being told
about how good it is, I decided to go ahead and
find out for myself.
I was only supposed to play it for an hour, but in
the end I didn’t, because of how boring... and of
course, I’m joking. I ended up playing it for longer.
It would have been a lot longer if I hadn’t had to
stop.
The level of detail that went into the game
is phenomenal. The amount of immersion
surrounding the base, it feels like you are really
there. YOU are The Commander. YOU are deciding
where to go. YOU decide which soldier has which
equipment. YOU decide if (like me) you want your
soldiers to have the most ridiculous facial hair and
hair colour in the history of all facial hairs and hair
colours. I’ve found out that fluorescent green looks
hilarious with a mustache.
On the subject of the soldiers, they truly feel like
living, breathing people. The ‘insta-death’ on the
XCOM: Enemy Within Special Edition 2013
