livestock work between them
while also supporting each
other. We have our own New
Holland combine harvester.
Robert looks after roles such as
the drilling and is responsible
for the cattle, while Craig
handles all the baling and takes
care of the sheep. We don’t
employ anyone else.
‘We fatten somewhere
between 500-600 cattle a year
with something like 100-150 on
farm at any one time. We buy
Limousin X and a few Belgian or
British Blues in at three-quarter
finished between 18-24 months
from Leyburn Mart and through
a buyer who sources stock from
Wales. They make for shapely
little butchers’ heifers and we
keep them for around three
months before selling them
here at Thirsk usually to butcher
Harry Lee in Thirsk or the
Robertshaws of Keelham Farm
Shop. We’ve topped the mart
quite a few times.
‘Our sheep run to a flock
of 190 ewes and are a mix
of Beltex and Texel X with
some Suffolk X that lamb in
January and February. We
buy replacements as hoggs
with lambs at foot and for the
last couple of years they have
mostly been bought privately
from Northumberland. We lamb
inside and because of it being
the early part of the year we run
them inside until the weather
picks up selling them all here in
Thirsk.’
The show name Wilkinson
& Marwood has become
reasonably well known in the
commercial cattle showing
world in more recent years. It’s
another family affair.
‘My brother, James has
been showing cattle for the
past 10-15 years,’ says Jackie.
Our upstairs wine department has
probably the finest selection of wines
and spirits in the region together with
a vast range of Champagnes, Sparkling
Wines, Prosecco, Ports and Sherries!
If it’s meat products you’re after, our
in house butchers have a great
selection of locally bred meats and
game and of course a selection of free
range and herb fed bronze turkeys.
We also have a fabulous selection of
olives and our fruit and veg area is
packed with the freshest produce,
delivered on a daily basis.
Plus we have a range of over 150
cheeses to tickle your taste buds
including the finest Stilton and just
for a change of menu we have a

Campbell’s of Leyburn
‘Everyone knows him as
Jimmy. He and his wife, Rachel
and their two children, Beth
and Luke are the ones that
do most of the work with the
show team, but Robert and I
are involved too. We joined
them to become Wilkinson &
Marwood about six years ago
after having gone with them
to shows for quite a few years.
James has his own show
And of course we stock all of your day to
day groceries including biscuits,
fruit cakes, artisan bread, fruit juices,
sweets and much, much more.
