We took this on as I wanted a new challenge and to add another string to our bow .
‘ I have a team of six of which I ’ m one alongside my sister , Cynthia . Robert comes and helps with the washing up ! We ’ re particularly busy with the fortnightly stores sales on a Tuesday , the fatstock sales on a Thursday , fur and feather sales and the furniture sales , but we ’ ve also taken on many special events including weddings , parties and black tie dinners . The mart looks spectacular when it ’ s all decked out for those .’
Jackie has also sponsored the recent Thirsk Rising Star Calf Show held at the mart , which has pedigree classes for Aberdeen Angus , Beef Shorthorn , British Blonde , Dexter and Highland . This year Any Other Continental and Any Other Native pedigree classes were added to the existing Commercial cattle and young handlers classes . Gavel Café sponsored the new Interbreed competition providing trophies and prize money .
‘ We ’ ve learned a lot in our first two years here ,’ says Jackie . ‘ What we ’ ve learned most is that if we don ’ t put on liver , bacon and onions at least once a month we will
have a revolt ! Farmers love liver just as much as they love homemade steak pie , roast beef and Yorkshire pudding , mince and dumplings , lasagne ,

John and Margaret moved from Patrick Brompton to Studdah K in 1967 . At one time the farm , like many in the area , had a dairy herd but that has long since gone . John passed away in 2009 and since then Robert and Jackie have altered their fattening of cattle from purely a winter occupation to all year round .
‘ We have 170 acres of arable land growing barley to feed the cattle with beans as a greening crop ,’ says Jackie . ‘ Others include oats and wheat which we sell on . Our land runs along the A684 and there won ’ t be many further up the dale than us who will be growing barley . The farm is ring fenced to the railway bridge and we then have 75 acres at Middlefields which we added for additional barley .
