changed from running a sow herd and
producing pigs to keeping pigs on a
bed and breakfast basis for Ian Mosey.
Dean tells of how that has simplified the
farming operation and why.
‘My dad, Frank, has retired although
that’s ‘retired’ in the farming sense. He’s
still around to put us right. We’d had a pig
man here for the past 10-12 years, but he
wanted to go back to his home country of
Poland. Our son Lewis is now responsible
for the day-to-day work on the farm. The
farm shop and attending farmers markets
has become more what I do with Angela
and our daughter Mary.’
‘Keeping pigs on bed and breakfast
helps as Lewis is also studying agriculture
at Askham Bryan College on day
release. We have 1600 pigs at any one
time, which come here as stores at 35
kilos and we take them to bacon. We
get our pigs for the shop through this
system, which means we don’t have to
be involved in the whole breeding programme.
The breeds include Large White
Landrace with a bit of Duroc, Pietrain or
Hampshire.’
Lamb works well, as does all meat, in
the shop and Dean tells of a particular following
they’ve developed for Hebridean
lamb.
‘We have Kerry Hill lamb from a
couple of local men, Chris Hall and John
Greenwood – and we buy lamb to fatten
up ready for the shop from livestock
markets such as Melton Mowbray. But
we also like Hebrideans and customers
buy half a Hebridean hogg for the freezer.
The thing about the Hebrideans is they
have a low appetite and as such don’t get
as fat as some rare native breeds. That
means they take a little longer to reach
the carcase size of a normal lamb, usually
between 18 months to 2 years. Their meat
is a deep crimson colour.’
All manner of vegetables are grown
and while Frank has the tag of being
‘retired’ he is the man in the greenhouse
and the vegetable plots where he grows
everything from courgettes, pumpkins,
broccoli, tomatoes, cucumbers and the
rest.
