There’s sausage making as well as butchering
and the shop is far more than a
butchery – it includes a great range
of fruit, vegetables, beers, wines
and all manner of household
provisions, plus a café.
Attendance at farmers
markets and food festivals
has always been a major
plank of Dean and Angela’s
marketing of the farm
shop and they are regular
attendees at farmer markets
in Horsforth, Hovingham, York,
Otley and Harrogate (when they
are back, subject to Covid-19 restrictions
at the time of going to press).
‘Where we have done well, particularly
over lockdown and restrictions on movement,
is because our supply chain is a bit
shorter than the supermarkets. Most of
our meat comes from our own farm and
the abattoirs we use, Penny’s at Rawdon
and Jewitt’s at Spennymoor, look after us
really well.’
The Hullahs aren’t about to call time on
their farming endeavours or their farm
shop any time soon – but calling ‘time’

Last year Dean and
Angela took on the Carlton
Inn in Husthwaite that is now a business
venture between their younger daughter
Catherine and Dean’s friend James and
his wife Connie.
‘It will be another outlet for our beef
and other supplies,’ says Dean. ‘Our
butcher Alan’s daughter was the previous
owner.’
