“ With the extra land we now have it would make it possible for us to have another 50 buffalo, although most of the additional land we’ ve taken on is arable. We grow winter wheat, barley and beans. The arable side has traditionally been a smaller side of the farm but that will increase now.”
The one element that Catherine misses is the sheep.
“ This is my second year without them. I like my Mules and it would also be great, now that we have our own shop, to have our own lamb selling through it. Steve Richardson of Great Houghton near Barnsley who has Large Whites and is a close family friend provides our pigs. We offer a full range of meat plus we bake our own sausage rolls, steak pies and quiches sold via our deli counter. We have a very experienced full-time butcher, Steve Stuchberry.”
Stephen Battye is a third generation farmer. His grandfather Harry Hattersley- Battye started it out. Stephen’ s father Albert and uncle Willis each subsequently took on a farm. Catherine also comes from farming stock and was brought up in Silkstone.
It has been a great start for the Battye’ s Farm Shop and has proved that coming out of dairy farming doesn’ t mean the death knell to getting on in other areas. Stephen and Catherine’ s next happier dilemma is keeping up with the demand for their buffalo.
“ We definitely need greater stock and it looks as though we may have to start importing young heifers from Italy as there aren’ t enough being produced in the UK yet to satisfy what is still a growing demand. We have a man in Italy who had two bulls with Cogent and we bought one from him. He’ s already offered to help us by sourcing appropriate young stock to build up the herd further.”
