LESSONS LEARNED
ALONG THE WAY
Chris tells of the lessons he
and Kate have learned from
running their own company for
the past decade:
“We have both learned that
running and growing a business
can be very challenging. I
remember listening to Lord
Sugar on The Apprentice.
He once said that one of
the things you must have in
business is the skin of a rhino.
That’s certainly true! You get
bombarded daily with questions
from customers, staff, councils,
legislative bodies, financial
people. You have to learn to
deal with and juggle all of that.
“Toughening up is something
that you just have to do
because as your business
grows, everything else
snowballs. You need more staff
because you have generated
more business; you need to
raise more finance because
you need bigger storage
capacity and you need to
make sure the cash flow is
right; these are all sorts of
issues that you don’t think
about beforehand. At first
you’re happy running your own
business with just a few staff.”
Chris counts his and Kate’s
team as being their proudest
achievement in the past
decade.
“We have been able to
bring some very good young
people into employment and
show them that this can be
