Chris’ parents farmed at Scriven House Farm, Wigginton near York before selling up and retiring. Kate’s family, the Dickinsons, continue to farm at Brompton by Sawdon. “Working and living together can be quite difficult for some couples but it works very well for us. I’m the one who drives the business forward while Kate looks after all of the administration and finance to make sure we’re always on the right track. “One of the worries I do have is that major companies in this market place are swallowing up the smaller ones like us. I feel it is a real shame because the local independent retailer like us has an important role to play in the farming industry. “We have just made an agreement with the mart here at Thirsk to lease another unit adjacent to the warehouse and relocate all of our farming related products because we have decided to split the Thirsk business into two sections. One will be specifically for farm supplies and the other a dedicated country store more for the general public as that side of our business has also grown massively over the time we have been here at Thirsk Auction Centre.
