sales.
‘have become
massive dates in
the York Auction
Centre calendar
attracting
over 5000 lots
every time’
The farm machinery sales
are a phenomenon. They were
started in 1990 and have
become massive dates in the
York Auction Centre calendar
attracting over 5000 lots every
time, as well as thousands of
buyers.
‘In the café we usually sell
over 500 breakfasts before
8am. That gives you some
indication of the numbers,’
says Richard. ‘At one time we
had huge numbers of Irish
coming over, landing at Leeds
Bradford Airport and arriving
by coachload here at Murton.
Their economy has altered that
in recent times but now we
get a lot of Eastern European
business with machinery
going out to Poland, Romania,
Bulgaria, Lithuania and the
Czech Republic. We also get
business from India and Africa.
Some buyers don’t come at all
and just use the internet based
i-Bidder system. The influx of
Eastern European trade can
create language problems
but to be honest we have
more problems in writing their
names down than anything
else. It’s odd writing a 12 letter
name down that includes just
one vowel.’
‘When the Eastern European
trade first came over they were
buying farm machinery at the
lower end of the market but
they’ve gradually shifted more
up market. At our last sale two
modern Vaderstad Rapide
drills were purchased to go to
Romania.’
Making a positive difference
to the farming community
