YORK AUCTION MART Farming Sector Leads the Adoption of Renewable Heat Technologies It’s now over two years since the non-domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (“RHI”) was introduced. The incentives, which are paid for twenty years and are indexlinked to inflation, are designed to encourage business and property owners to generate heat using green technologies such as biomass boilers and heat pumps rather than from traditional systems that burn fossil fuels. According to the latest quarterly OFGEM statistics, almost 30% of all RHI accreditations were in the Agricultural sector proving that the farming community is leading the adoption of renewable heat technologies in the same they it embraced solar and wind. Of the 3,769 accredited RHI installations, 93% were biomass boiler compared to 3% for heat pumps and 3% for solar thermal. For Duncan Renewables, the Yorkshirebased Biomass Installer of the Year 2013, there was never any doubt as to which technology would spearhead the transition to renewable heating. According to Managing Director, Stuart Duncan, the key advantages of biomass over rival technologies are: • the ease by which systems are retrofitted into existing buildings or heating processes; • the proven, reliable nature of the technology; and • its ability to meet heating and hot water requirements even in the coldest conditions. The farming sector in particular has rushed to adopt biomass due to farm locations typically being off the gas grid where the only means of heating are often LPG and oil, both of which are relatively expensive compared to wood pellets or wood chips. Duncan Renewables have a large range of farming case studies including broiler chicken producers, dairy farmers and farmhouses with holiday cottages or rented units. ‘since 2010 the company has also installed more than 10MWs of solar PV’ Since 2010 the company has also installed more than 10MWs of solar PV which continues to be one of the most active sectors as the benefits of solar in the UK become more proven. The availability of finance is extremely good as lenders also become more comfortable with renewables. For further information on renewable technologies and visit www.duncanrenewables.co.uk.
