TANCRED FARM SHOP We breed all slaughter stock and supply Jewitts of Spennymoor with 120 cutters a week. “Our sheep flock runs to around 50 and we try not to breed! Occasionally we end up with some that lamb, which happened this year! I bought a Mule ewe that came as a batch of mutton ewes. She turned out to be in-lamb and has lambed a nice pair of Suffolk X lambs ready for Easter. It’s the best deal I’ve ever done!” he smiled. “Most goats kept in Britain are here for dairying, but the castrated males come here from Lowna Dairies of South Cave. When they are big enough we sell their meat really easy for curries. “Our Lincoln Red meat is fantastic: it contains lovely marbling, all our cattle are finished on grass and the cows are very easy to calve. Our bull is like a big teddy bear, he is that easy to handle. They don’t get stressed about anything. I have no interest in parading them around show rings though. I’d rather walk around with a couple of sirloin steaks to show just how good they are!” Other livestock include ducks for laying big white Aylesbury eggs; geese for Christmas, with goslings starting in April. In the shop, Dean and Angela also stock turkey and chicken from Nidderdale Poultry, venison and game birds; and occasionally rabbits. Wheat and barley is grown and used for making pig feed through their own mill and mix. Dean is particularly conscious about getting recipes right so that the pork and bacon is as good as you can get - anywhere. Today the acreage at Tancred Field Farm is down to approximately a 50/50 split between grass and arable. Fodder beet is grown for sheep feed and increasing amounts of grass for the Lincoln Reds.
