TANCRED FARM SHOP
Prime cut
at Tancred
Farm Shop
Chris Berry meets Dean
Hullah and his team at
Tancred Field Farm, Whixle.
Dean Hullah cut up his
first pig on a clean sheet
of plywood on top of a
stack of pallets. But he
has come a long way since
then and now, together
with his wife Angie, they
run one of Yorkshire’s
newest and in my view, one
of the county’s finest farm
shops.
Tancred Farm Shop opened
18 months ago and is doing a
roaring trade just off the road
between Green Hammerton
and Little Ouseburn. They
also have a stand at Farmers
Markets and Angela runs an
outside catering business
serving hog roasts for special
events. At the same time
they also run quite a livestock
enterprise at Tancred Field
Farm.
Dean loves it all, even though
he admits that running a
livestock farm plus a farm shop
means that holidays are few
and far between!

week but I’ve always enjoyed
talking to people about meat
provenance and quality,” he
told me. “It’s about making
everything as good as you can
make it and we get such a lot
of positive feedback. I thrive on
nice comments! We are never
going to be millionaires and
our produce is never going
to be expensive - we are just
trying to do a good job and
make a living.”
Dean’s parents lived in
Whixley until 1982. His dad,
Frank was a farm worker and
always had ambition to farm
in his own right. When the
opportunity came he took
a North Yorkshire County
Council tenancy on a farm at
Osgodby near Selby for two
years. Tancred Field Farm
came up for tenancy in 1984
