Coming home : Parker Milsap anticipates Sooner Theatre shindig

By Julie Wenger Watson
NASHVILLE , Tenn . – Purcell native Parker Millsap returns to Oklahoma March 9 for a concert at Norman ’ s Sooner Theatre .
To say 2016 was a good year for the 23-year oldsinger songwriter is a bit of an understatement . The Very Last Day , Millsap ’ s third album , debuted a year ago to rave reviews from critics and fans alike and later received a nomination for the Americana Music Association ’ s “ Album of the Year .” In July , Millsap performed the record ’ s title track on Conan when he made his first network television appearance . And , oh , Elton John ( yes , THAT Elton John ) asked Millsap to join him on stage at the Apple Music Festival at London ’ s Roundhouse .
Things are looking good for 2017 , too . Millsap ’ s “ Austin City Limits ” performance aired at the end of January , and he ’ s hard at work on a new album .
“ We ’ re making a new record ,” Millsap said . “ It probably won ’ t be out until 2018 , but I ’ ve got some songs , and I ’ m writing some more . There are some exciting things that are going to happen with it .”
Fans will be able to hear some of those new tunes at the Norman show , along with older favorites .
“ We ’ ll do a little bit of everything . We ’ re still doing some songs off of Palisade , but just arranged for the full band . We still do tunes off the self-titled record , tunes from The Very Last Day , and some new stuff . We spread it out ,” Millsap noted . We ’ ve been playing the new tunes for a few months on the road now , testing them out .”
Millsap ’ s touring band includes high school classmate Michael Rose on bass , fiddler Daniel Foulks and drummer Paddy Ryan . Millsap has been leaving his acoustic guitar at home lately , opting for his electric .
Although he recently relocated to Nashville , Millsap regularly makes it back to his home state . He ’ s looking forward to the Norman show .
“ I ’ m really excited about this show ,” Millsap said . “ One of the first shows I ever saw in Norman was at the Sooner Theatre . One of my old guitar teachers played a show there , so to get to play there and headline is pretty exciting .”
Speaking of former guitar teachers , fellow Oklahoman Travis Linville is opening the evening .
“ He ’ s another guitar teacher of mine from Norman ,” Millsap laughed . “ When I was about 14 , I took lessons from Travis for about three months . It ’ s pretty awesome to have him on the show . He ’ s been on a few tours with us . I love having him there . He ’ s such a great player and songwriter .”
Millsap likes the energy and the camaraderie the band brings to the performances .
It ’ s a change from his earlier days where he often played as a solo acoustic act .
“ I ’ ve felt a lot of pressure to talk on stage a lot when I was first starting – just the environment of the kind of shows I was playing , house concerts and bars where people were just sitting there staring at you ,” he recalled . “ Now I have a broader catalogue and a band . We just play a lot more music in this show , so it ’ s less pressure for everybody , and I love it .”
In the end , it ’ s all about the music .
“ I love playing music with my band . That ’ s the thrill for me , playing music with other people ,” Millsap explained . “ Everybody gets to be themselves , and you all just get to bounce off each other within the framework of the songs . I play with really creative people , so it makes it new every time .”
