Renowned bluegrass musician

Byron
Berline
In 1995, after moving to Guthrie,
the three-time national fiddle
champion Berline opened up
the Double Stop Fiddle Shop (a
double-stop is bowing two notes at
the same time on the fiddle, using
one finger), selling fiddles, guitars,
banjos, offering instrument repair,
and more. He also formed the
Byron Berline Band, which performs
upstairs in the shop twice monthly.
However, Berline wanted to do
something more to give back to the
bluegrass community.
“How I got interested in creating the
festival was, I travelled a lot back
in the ‘70s, to Europe and Japan,
and I noticed almost every country
had a bluegrass band. I just got to
thinking, a lot of them had never
been to the U.S., and wouldn’t it
be wonderful to have a bluegrass
festival in my home state? The
international bluegrass musicians
would get the opportunity to see
some of the bluegrass legends that
they admired and we would have
people from all over the world,”
explained Berline.
“The international bluegrass
community has maintained
the integrity of the
instrumentation. And they do what
all Americans do when they want
to learn bluegrass; they listen and
immerse themselves in it. They listen
to Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, and
the others, and learn from them,”
Berline added.
This years’ three-day event includes
the Louvat Brothers from Belgium,
The Blueside of Lonesome from
Japan, The Elders of Ireland, and
Nick Charles from Australia among
others.
Headlining the festival is American
singer, songwriter, and bluegrass
mandolin player Sierra Hull.
Impromptu jam sessions spring up
all over the festival grounds as
well as the nearby campgrounds,
so bring your fiddle, harmonica, or
guitar.
If you’re not feeling shy, the
Cottonwood Creek Stage is an
open mic offering amateurs the
chance to perform.
Also, don’t miss the annual auction
featuring musical instruments and
other music items.
For kids, there is a youth tent
showcasing young performers and
activities for kids.
