I am bored. There’s nothing to do at CSU. How many times have you said or heard someone say those exact words? All of that is about to change. Columbus State has over 8,200 students enrolled for the Fall semester, and the Student Recreation Center on main campus has become a hub for student life. “Campus Recreation is very excited to further meet student fitness, health, and recreational needs,” says Rick Cravens, Director of Campus Recreation. “The facility houses a fitness area along with an aquatic center. It features two basketball courts, workout area, two aerobic rooms, free weight area, running track, multipurpose court, two racquetball courts, indoor soccer, volleyball, and large event area.” Cravens has been coordinating sports

at CSU for 27 years. Since his tenure, he has seen this $26 million, 106,000 square foot facility rise from a paved parking lot. This past Spring, Columbus State was awarded the 2013 Outstanding Sports Facility Award from the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association. This award recognizes excellence in distinctive architectural features, positive impact on student life, and exemplary functionality. “The big effort is to get more students informed about what is happening at their Recreation Center. They are lucky to have a facility as great as this one. Whether it’s the rock-climbing wall or lazy river and water volleyball court, there is something for everyone. We want them to get more involved on campus, and not to mention, the Recreation Center promotes the Columbus State academic mission.
