CCCC superintendent is asking for the community ’ s support
By Marianne Austin
Coshocton County Career Center superintendent Matt Colvin said , “ We truly believe our graduating students are going to be those that continue to thrive in our community and rejuvenate the workforce here in Coshocton County . Our teachers and staff have a strong belief in that , and we just have a neat environment here . Anyone is welcome to come in during the day to watch and see what our students are learning . Our kids are coming out prepared and ready to go to work . We are one of the only schools in the state that have board certifications for welding .”
Career center program completers can go right into a profession .
“ We have a 99 % graduation rate ,” Colvin said . “ Forty-eight percent of high school juniors in the county are attending the career center , and that ’ s the highest enrollment we have ever had and one of the reasons we need operating money .”
Colvin feels the school will continue to see high enrollment based on the fact that career tech is the new wave .
“ Not that we don ’ t need students that go to college because we still need the teachers , the doctors and the lawyers ,” Colvin said . “ But we need students coming out ready to work handson in industry , being able to perform the welding , the mechanics jobs , billing , coding and clerical jobs , as well as coming

out with the ability to be early childhood teachers , STNA or phlebotomists . There is a huge calling for that , not only in this area , but surrounding areas .”
The Ohio School Board Association reached out to the career center in support of the levy , knowing how important it is to the community . Dr . Berry at COTC in Coshocton reached out in support of the levy as well . A partnership with Berry for the health-tech class means this year students can use the labs at COTC .
“ Auto tech , construction technology and metal fabrication students can use the COTC computer aided design program , allowing them to view the auto-tech program from their computers ,” Colvin said . “ COTC just upgraded the CAD program . Computers with CAD are very expensive because they are bigger and store more memory , enabling them to hold more information . Not only do they have them , but they just installed the latest software . Dr . Berry was very generous to offer the use of these computers . That means these three programs are going to have the opportunity to use their computers if they choose to . That is a huge deal .”
Jeff Drennen Dealerships also is assisting the students .
“ They donated a 2018 Ford Focus this year , which will allow students to be trained on the newest technology so that when the state comes to view the auto-tech program , students will be able to pass ASE ( automotive service excellence ) certification ,” Colvin said . “ That is a huge deal .”
The career center has been absorbing the cost of AEP closing and the frozen state funding in 2019 while still continuing to offer students the highest quality careertech education and while they ’ ll have been in deficit spending .
“ Supporting this tax will have a minimal impact on the community . It is literally cents on the dollar ,” Colvin said . “ This 1-mil continuance tax levy will cost tax payers the same amount as the PI levy back in 2015-19 that ran out . The PI levy only paid for improving the building and grounds that have a life expectancy of at least five years or more , but the operating levy can be used for all permanent improvements . Improvements could be sidewalks , parking lots , roof , windows , carpeting , plus day-to-day expenses like staffing and supplies at the same rate as the old levy . That ’ s the huge thing about an operating levy ; we are not asking for more money .”
Colvin said this is a new tax because right now they are not getting any money from any place . It is at the same rate as the levy that ran out . This new tax is replacing that one .
“ The last levy was a permanent improvement , and this new levy is an operating levy ,” Colvin said . “ I think the community understands the importance of the career center . Our kids are coming out prepared and ready to work . We have the highest enrollment that we have ever had in the school ’ s history . We ’ ve got to pass this levy , or we can ’ t offer this career-tech education to our students .”
