Youth leadership class learns about small businesses

Our CCYL class started out our day in the art room of Rust Decor . Betsy greeted us as we walked in the door and gave us our first instructions . As soon as we sat down Hannah Gallagher took her spot as our first speaker of the day . She introduced herself and asked us some questions to learn more about us . Betsy returned to the podium and we promptly moved on to our next speaker . Mindy Brems graced us with her presence and told us all about the tourism industry in Coshocton . Unbelievably , Coshocton has about 400,000 visitors every year . Last year was the first time to have recorded a visitor from every state in the U . S ., which is also unbelievable .
After Mindy finished , Tiffany Swigert from the Port Authority Office spoke to us about the responsibilities of the Port Authority . It helps to keep things moving in Coshocton ; education aspects , government , banking , small businesses and industry . On Main Street , next to the current Port Authority building , the Port Authority is constructing a small business development center for all the at-home small business owners and the aspiring entrepreneurs of Coshocton County .
Brad Fuller was next on our schedule and he spoke about his experiences running his small business , The Good Boy Bakery in Roscoe . He described his business as a “ Living and breathing example of what the Port Authority does .” He explained his inspiration of giving back to the community that has given so much to him . His store sells treats for people and their pets , and to help out the ownerless-pets in Coshocton , he partnered with the animal
shelter and raised over 5,000 dollars for the animal shelter . Brad also strongly encouraged each one of us to start a business in Coshocton , and he told us to be community oriented .
Georgina Rivera , owner of the Yucatan , came and shared her life running a small business . Rivera said that being different is the key to surviving with a small business . She also made sure we understood that customers should be treated like family and to

keep strong relationships with your community members as well . Rivera ’ s motto was “ be flexible ” and “ consistency is key .” Some customers are hard to please and there are lots of different kinds of people that you could interact with .
Jill Sheridan honored us with her presence as the last of our amazing speakers for the day . “ A small business is not for the faint of heart ” she said . Sheridan encouraged us to be like her business and cooperate
with other businesses to expand / sell / branch-out . She says you gotta know what people want , and you have to know who to ask . You can ’ t operate smoothly if you aren ’ t willing to work with others . Often you can ’ t do it alone . She also gave us the advice , “ multiple sources of revenue is a good idea . There ’ s always something to do at Rust Decor .”
