Impact of regional projects discussed at recent meeting

By Josie Sellers
Several regional projects are set to change Ohio in many ways , and Coshocton officials want to be prepared to use these to help move the community forward .
On May 7 the Coshocton County commissioners and the Coshocton Port Authority hosted a presentation by consultant Betsy Goldstein , who has been researching the impact of
the Intel semiconductor plant coming to Licking County .
“ She is going to present information to you that will give you a good idea of the future for our children and grandchildren ,” commissioner Dane Shryock said .
Coshocton Port Authority Executive Director Tiffany Swigert said Goldstein wants to help communities create partnerships and prepare for
the best outcomes regarding the transformations that are coming to Ohio .
“ Projects will touch our community and our families ,” Swigert said . “ She can help us with how our community and our businesses can prepare for what is to come .”
Goldstein lives in downtown Columbus and was working for an architectural firm in 2022 when she first found out about Intel coming to Ohio . She
was amazed by the company planning to invest up to $ 100 billion in Ohio and the possible 20,000 jobs they would play a role in creating . Goldstein took her research and hosted a volunteer lunch and learn for her firm . After that , she quit her job and started traveling all over the region to encourage and help Ohio communities plan and prepare for the impact of Intel .
“ This is the largest private investment in our state ’ s history ,” Goldstein said . “ It will touch every single community and transform Ohio for generations to come .”
Construction on the facility has already started , and Intel is working with higher education institutions to prepare Ohioans for upcoming careers . Investments also will be made in arts and science
education to get children thinking in innovative ways .
“ We are known for Ohio State football and corn , but soon we will be a sophisticated tech area as well ,” Goldstein said . The average salary of Intel employees is $ 130,000 , and Intel said for each job it creates , 13 more will be created . Goldstein also said people will come for these jobs from the East and West Coasts , and their way of life is different than ours .
She said driving over an hour for work is not a big deal for them .
Housing for these employees and their families will be needed in Licking County and surrounding areas . Roads will need to be changed to handle additional traffic , and public transportation will need to expand .
“ People from the coasts are not used to having to get into their cars for every single place and space they want to go to ,” Goldstein said .
All these updates will help with other projects in the Columbus area such as the Merchant Building , which will add hotel space to the North Market , a symphony hall and a new airport terminal .

Shryock and Swigert were both appreciative of everyone coming to hear Goldstein talk .
“ We have some really fantastic community leaders in this room , and I think this is a launching pad for more conversations ,” Swigert said .
