The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is presenting“ Pushing the Surface,” an exhibition of contemporary art quilts that explores the boundaries of tradition and innovation. Now in its 14th biennial installment, this show features work from nationally and internationally recognized artists.
While rooted in the fundamental structure of quilting— layered fabrics held together by stitching— these pieces break free from convention. Some surfaces are pieced and patched in traditional fashion while others are painted, dyed, laser-printed, appliquéd or fused.
