Exchange student leaves artistic mark on Coshocton

With just spray paint and his imagination , Javier Ordovas has been using his artistic skills to beautify Coshocton .
“ I don ’ t do any drawings ,” said the 16-year-old Spanish exchange student who is staying with Janette Donaker and her family . “ It just comes to me while I ’ m working on it .”
Ordovas picked up his graffiti art craft after working with a friend back home in Spain . “ I went with a friend to paint some walls and liked it so much that I started painting with him ,” he said . “ I like the freedom of painting a wall and being able to do whatever I want .”
Ordovas told Donaker he does graffiti work , and she spoke to her family members who own Shelby Theaters . After they posted his piece on Facebook , he picked

up other jobs around town including painting at the art- PARK .
“ When we designed the artPARK , we created a couple small graffiti walls on our water cistern ,” Anne Cornell from the Pomerene Center for the Arts said . “ When Pomerene Friend Wendy Bowen contacted me to make sure I knew Janette Donaker ’ s family was hosting a Spanish exchange student / talented graffiti artist , I thought now ’ s the time .”
She was very impressed with his work .
“ This young artist possesses three major creative attributes ,” Cornell said . “ One , he ’ s incredibly talented with a sure hand and a great sense of space and design ( composition ). Two , he ’ s interested in trying new things and willing to take a risk . He had never ventured beyond tagging / lettering until he agreed to do a graffiti translation of the leaf and vine wallpaper pattern designed by GentleBrook artists that has become the branding for the Pom ’ s Arts & Health initiative . Three , he has stamina . Last Sunday he painted straight for 4 1 / 2 hours . All told when he leaves to go home to Madrid in the middle of December , he ’ ll have painted four semi-tractor trailers ( on County Road 1A ), a large block wall and , yes , the artPARK cistern .”

Donaker also enjoys seeing him share his work with the community . “ Javier does it all freehand with just a can of paint and what he envisions in his head before he starts ,” she said . “ He has only been painting for less than two years . We have really enjoyed watching Javier express himself through his painting . He is a very talented artist .”
Cornell is thankful Donaker shared him and his skills with the community .
“ We are so grateful to Javier for sharing his art with our community and to Janette Donaker for being his chauffeur and encouraging host ,” Cornell said .

“ The styles of art we do in Spain , we didn ’ t do here in art class ,” he said . “ Here you can do what you want in art class . The person next to you is doing something different than you . I liked meeting people who do different types of art and sharing our work .”
