Separate family fact from myth
Wouldn ’ t it be wonderful if your mother ’ s mother gave you an old handwritten diary containing pages and pages of family traditions ? What a great gift this Christmas .
But let ’ s not get too carried away . One source of data is not always sufficient to make your new gift loaded with “ facts .” You may discover areas of information where you might need more proof to separate fact from myth .
If you have worked with genealogical material , you have to be discrete at times but know it ’ s not impossible because there is always some element of truth in most traditions . You need to carefully decide where fiction commences and fact terminates .
For example , most people want to be associated with a popular or well-known figure like Abraham Lincoln . Could that be possible ? It wouldn ’ t take too long to weed out the truth using the internet ’ s access . But if it ’ s that simple , you

can immediately determine Lincoln had four sons , so it ’ s probable you might be related . Information can be passed on orally from one generation to the next and tend to become grander and grander with time .
In probing the origin of Lincoln ’ s family tradition , you may uncover facts of less magnitude that could prove equally intriguing .
Getting the facts , even one hidden in legend , is all part of the genealogist ’ s task .
Your family resource involves turning evidence into fact by verifying the data collected from journals , phone conversations and written correspondence .
Family records are essential for proving the validity of your evidence . Often the source was the family Bible . While other
records are not always available , Bible records are often the main source of data and often accepted as reliable by most societies .
Check the printing date of the Bible with the dates of family entries . Entries like this indicate the entries were made by one person after the fact . If the handwriting varies noticeably , chances are the data was recorded by various households . Statistics of family members often show birth , death and marriage dates .
While the custom is not used today , older relatives may have a Bible in their possession .
A number of colonial diaries have been reprinted and supply valuable information , not only to direct line , but also clues to an ancestor ’ s personality . At best a diary can serve to verify evidence you might already possess .
Other than journals , family wills , unrecorded deeds , old passports , Social Security cards , photographs , old letters ,
quilts , military discharge papers , ledger books and personal diaries are invaluable . Even ancient Egyptians and Romans used histories of their own families for compiling their noble lineages .
As for compiling your exploration of family history , be sure you know the difference between truth and their related tradition .
