Twenty boxes will soon be on their way to local military personnel who won ’ t be home for Christmas , thanks to the efforts of the Blue Star Mothers . Several volunteers met Dec . 6 to pack the boxes with surprises . “ We want them to know that they are not forgotten — to know we are thinking of them as they serve our country ,” said Sharon Burns , president of the Blue Star Mothers . “ We want to try to do boxes every month . Most of them are going out of the country , but some will be sent to service people here too .”

Burns said the group is always looking for addresses of local military personnel .
“ It ’ s hard to get addresses , but we want to acknowledge as many local military people as we can , even if we just send a card and maybe a gift card to let them know they are being thought about ,” Burns said .
Anyone who has a military family member is encouraged to contact Burns with an address .
The boxes include personal-care items , snacks , tuna , gum , candy , magazines and letters from local school children . Leslie Croft ’ s second-grade class and Shelley Moats ’ first-grade classes wrote letters , colored pictures and brought candy
