CHANGING TRACKS Jenneke van Genechten, from Limburg, wanted to become a writer when she was younger. Now she runs two companies, ‘Lettergeniek’ and ‘HOLY shit.’. With ‘HOLY shit.’, a company aimed at coaching and medicine plant ceremonies, like magic truffles. She wants to show people how they can influence their own thoughts and how much impact they have on their own lives. She wants to help people get rid of their mental health problems by letting them live more freely, like she does herself. WHY DID YOU START TO STUDY IMEM? “After finishing my psychology studies, it just started for me. How could I help people get rid of their psychical problems? I have not been through anything myself yet! Maybe it was because of my home-situation that I started studying psychology in the first place, because going to University, that was it (according to my dad). I decided to take a different road and follow my ambition to become a copywriter by starting IMEM.” 15 Jenneke van Genechten HOW DID YOUR CAREER EVOLVE AFTER GRADUATING? “I first graduated in my own company (Lettergeniek.nl), which did well from the start. I wrote copy for clients, mostly commercial parties. At some point, this was running out of control, which made me hire people to help me out. After five years, I suddenly thought: the only thing I am doing is arranging stuff, and I do not have time to write my book. Is this what I want? So, I scheduled one day a week to write and one day to think about my company.” “I found out that I wanted to do something with psychology, however, not in a therapeutic setting. The last couple of years, I have been busy with personal development which I found mainly in the use of medicine plants like ayahuasca and truffles. Of course, this subject is taboo, and drugs are for people who get high and make irresponsible decisions. However, this is not how it works. The way I see it: nature made the medicines, and I think this is not without a reason (I only use natural medicine plants). Besides, it is about how you use them, namely in a safe environment, in moderation, and with a mentor who knows what they are doing.”
