The UNE COM Student Government President, Maria Jones, COM ’21 and Vice President Phil Lee, COM ‘21 have taken their leadership positions very seriously since Maria was handed the pink-spray painted gavel at last year’s End of the Year Celebration. Historically, the event pays tribute to the yearly transition as first year students step into their leadership positions for what will then be their second year of medical school.
Though both students are making their own transition into their third-year clinical sites, Maria’s time with COSGP is far from over:
COSGP-AND IT’S ONLY JUST BEGINNING
I was elected to serve on the COSGP Executive Board as the National First Vice Chair for 2019-2020. The Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP) represents all 31,000 osteopathic medical students through the elected SGA leadership from each of the 52 osteopathic medical schools in the nation. COSGP serves the osteopathic medical profession and aims to further advance medical education.
The COSGP National First Vice Chair serves both the General Council of COSGP, along with the rest of the Executive Board, as well as all of the osteopathic medical students in the country. The First Vice Chair is additionally the student liaison for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME), chair for the COSGP Leadership Committee, and coordinator for the quarterly business meetings of the COSGP general council.
I am incredibly humbled and excited to have the opportunity to serve in this role with such an amazing group of leaders and represent both UNE COM and every osteopathic medical student in this capacity.
-Maria Jones, COM '21
UNE COM is thrilled to have Maria represent our students on the national level, and look forward to her wonderful leadership this next year. Stepping up to fill the void that Maria and Phil’s absence will leave, first-year students, Valerie Pendleton and Abraham Halstein will assume the roles of SGA President and Vice President respectively.
