of medical school. His fellow class officers, Class President, Amanda O’Donnell, and Scott Morin, joined him onstage to present the class superlatives, along with framed photographs. The awards ranged from comical (best looking and best bromance), to more practical (who the students would choose as their doctor). They also showcased the winners of the scavenger hunt the evening before in Portland, ME.
Once the student awards were completed, Associate Dean Pat Kelley assumed the podium to recognize the W. Hadley Hoyt, Jr. DO Award recipient. The award recognizes dedication to the osteopathic profession and life-long learning. The award was given to Elizabeth McAndrew for her leadership roles and volunteer spirit. She was selected by her peers as a UNE COM Student of the Month, was a member of the Curriculum and Technology Committee on the Student Government Association (SGA), participated as a Student Interviewer, Mentor, and Tour Guide for prospective students, was Vice President of the OB/GYN Club, volunteered at the Biddeford Soup Kitchen, was a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society for her dedication to geriatric medicine, and joined Dr. Stacey Thieme in an inter-professional project that brought together students from the various health professions at UNE.
Afterwards, Associate Dean Kelley presented the Donna Jones Moritsugu Award. The award is given to the partner of a medical student who has not only been a supportive partner, but has become part of the UNE COM community. Anne Victoria Whitehead, partner of student, James Brazdzionis, was chosen because of her pursuit of a Master’s degree to become a mental health therapist, and applying what she learned to help COM students manage their stress, including guided medications. These experiences helped inform her thesis around the mental health needs of medical students.
