naments and other activities. Our slogan
for this year is “Get Involved” and that
means everyone should do something.
Winter luncheons keep us connected
Thanks to the Membership Commit-
tee, led by Jean Czubin, and including
Janet Ferguson, Pat Struckman, and
Maryanna Wiese, our members have
been staying connected this winter, en-
joying the monthly luncheons at The
Turn. New and prospective members
have joined in the fun, giving them a
chance to become acquainted and get a
feel for our friendly, welcoming group.
The final luncheon of the winter is
scheduled for Thursday, March 19. De-
tails for pre-ordering will be sent to
members via email.

I was so delight-
ed to have raised
$2,000 at our Jan.

RICHARDS every cent went to
Friends of French

with their legal costs protecting our
valuable farmland from developers.

Information on the New World Handi-
capping System will continue to be rein-
forced during the luncheons and through-
out the season in the hope that we all be-
come comfortable with it and understand
the new processes. Handicap Chair Diane
Meyers reminds us to load the new GHIN
app on our smartphones and enter our
scores immediately after play, whether
it’s here at Charbonneau, or on other
courses. The app makes it easy to enter
your hole-by-hole scores and automatical-
ly tallies the totals and maximum scores
using the new “Net Double Bogey” sys-
tem. You may still post on the pro shop
computer or on your home computer, but
remember to post immediately, as our
handicaps will be revised nightly. For
Day’s Play with CWGA, the Scoring Com-
mittee will post all scores.
How will I receive my daily update for
my Handicap Index? You will not receive
a daily Handicap Index update email
from USGA GHIN. The information will
update automatically on the system and
Thanks to the Rotary’s efforts. The age
range was 90 plus to two 10 year olds
and one 12! The young chess players
did exceptionally well!
Most of you know that Charbonneau
started on Exclusive Farm Use Land in
1973. It caused quite a stir. Governor Mc-
Call and the Legislature passed Senate
Bill 100 so that the protection of our farm-
land was iron clad. The bill also added 19
Oregon State Land Use Goals. As a com-
munity, for the last 47 years, we have
been one of the strongest supporters of
Senate Bill 100.
With all the rancor and choosing sides
etc., we’re not against the airport. We un-
derstand that it’s an economic engine,
that it supports local business, that life
you will have to retrieve the information
yourself, by either looking at your phone
app, or checking in on the website, on
your home computer or the club comput-
er at GHIN.com. CWGA will not post up-
dates for Course Handicaps this year in
the club room, but your GHIN Numbers
will be posted for the season, April 1 to
Oct. 31.
Oregon Golf Association is sending
out a bi-monthly Handicap Update
Newsletter, and all OGA GHIN members
should receive one. The newsletter has
your GHIN Number, Handicap Index for
that day, and articles about golf. If you
did not receive the email newsletter Feb.
1 and 15, contact Diane at dianedavis-
[email protected].
Many thanks to Men’s Club member
(and CWGA spouse) Bill Moir, for taking
many hours of his time to train our
members on how to use the Golf Genius program that pro shops and clubs are us-
ing across the country. Chris Bensel has
used it to set up our scrambles and tour-
naments and the Men’s Club adopted it
two years ago to set up all their games
and handle the scoring and posting of
their club’s matches. Thanks to their
positive experiences, CWGA and the
Niners have both opted to use it to set up
games and handle the scoring. The pro-
gram allows us to set up the day’s game,
print the scorecards, enter the scores,
print out the results and post to GHIN.
As of this writing, the games have been
set up, just waiting to plug in the golfers
and course assignments. We’ve been do-
ing practice rounds and gaining confi-
dence, so keep fingers crossed that by
April, we’ll be true “golf geniuses.” Be
sure to thank the two teams who have
worked to set up and become confident
with the program: Diane Meyers, Cathi
McLain, Brenda Hankins, Kathy Gib-
bons, Ginny Moir and Laura Noffke.
flight is stationed there. They still have
some work to do on noise abatement and
they understand that.
Many Charbonneau residents have
said they’re OK with the airport, just not
a bigger one. A bigger one means more
noise, more pollution, more surface traf-
fic, challenges to our exceptional proper-
ty values and Exclusive Farm Use land.
Just keep it the same size and it’s a total-
ly different discussion. Safety? There
were four fatal accidents this month on
the roads surrounding the airport. How
is adding several hundred cars and
trucks a day to an already stressed road
system safer? How is letting jets that are
rated for longer runways land now so
that later they can claim a need for a run- way extension in the name of safety?
Finally, if anyone is interested in help-
ing out with our active Civic Affairs
Committee we are looking for diverse,
thoughtful insight into many issues com-
ing up this year. This is the grass roots
understanding of the Legislature’s ac-
tions that effect our community. Char-
bonneau is formidable as a voting group.
Whether it’s the protection of our river
banks, affordable housing, our choices as
voters, the Willamette Falls locks, our
transportation and traffic issues, water,
and literally etc. etc. We usually meet
once a month and have real discussions
about these issues. Come help or sit in
on a meeting.
