THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 17 March 2020 Charbonneau Women’s Golf Association By CATHI MCLAIN Stay connected during winter luncheons Message from president Joann Linville The month of March is National Women’s History month and a perfect time to look back at the history of wom- en’s golf. In March 1910, Harper’s Ba- zaar magazine featured a woman golfer on its cover with the headline “Golf Swing Tips — Learn Simple Ways to Swing a Golf Club and Lower Your Score.” How I wish I could read that ar- ticle and find those simple ways to low- er my score. In 1950 the Ladies Profes- sional Golf Association (LPGA) was started and held its first official tourna- ment season. The first winner of the U.S. Women’s Open was Babe Zaharias, winning a first place prize of $1,250. The total purse in 1950 for the U.S. Women’s Open was $3,500. Jeongeun Lee won the 2019 U.S. Women’s Open, which had a total purse of $5 million. Her share for first place was $1 million. Since 1950, golf has seen many fabulous women golfers who continue to make us all proud of the game we love. Yet it was only in 2012 that Augusta National added Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore as their first female mem- bers, and 2015 when the esteemed Brit- ish Royal St. George voted to admit fe- male members. It was very exciting to see the U.S. Women’s Amateur Tourna- ment held at Augusta in 2019. We are fortunate at Charbonneau Golf Course to have vibrant and active women’s golf clubs serving women golfers of all lev- els living in and outside Charbonneau. Our Opening Day 8 a.m. breakfast and scramble with tee times will be April 9, so look for sign-up sheets dur- ing the last two weeks of March. Now is a great month to find those exercises that strengthen and improve the flexi- bility of our legs, hips, back and shoul- ders.
