Charbonneau
Tennis Club
By STEVE HALL
Starting off strong in
2020
The tennis club
ended year 2019 in
excellent financial
condition. We ex-
perienced the fol-
lowing:
Q Revenue ex-
HALL ceeding expenses
and as a result the
membership dues didn’t need to be in-
creased for 2020
Q The reserve fund is nearly $160,000
Q We are starting the new year with a
full membership count and a wait list.
This is the first year we haven’t been
able to grant membership to everyone on
the waitlist. In addition, most of the out-
door pickleball members renewed their
memberships for 2020.
Updating the club appearance
Thanks go out to Kathi Gray and Peg
Saries for upgrading the appearance of
the club’s entryway. It is very warm and
welcoming. Peg is also in the process of
replacing the benches adjacent to the in-
door courts with matching benches.
Member news
This month we are recognizing Jerry
Baker who is a valuable member of our
tennis club board and chair of our mainte-
nance committee.
Jerry was born in California but
This month, Jerry Baker is being recognized for
his work on the board and maintenance
committee. The appearance to the club’s entryway was updated.
moved with his parents to Ashland, Ore-
gon when he was 6. He spent grade school
in Ashland, junior high in Medford, high
school in Milwaukie and college at Ore-
gon State University in Corvallis.
He didn’t start playing tennis until he
was 65 years old. He was introduced to
the game by friends he was visiting in
Florida. He has very few regrets in life
but one is that he didn’t learn to play ten-
nis 30 or 40 years earlier. Although he is
addicted to the sport, he says he will nev-
er have the instincts of people who
learned to play tennis as a younger per-
son.
He and his wife moved to Charbon-
neau a little over four years ago so they
could live close to their three sons who
live in the Portland area. A non-negotia-
ble criteria for finding a place in the Port-
land area to live was that it had to have
indoor tennis available nearby and Char-
bonneau was perfect. They also liked the
fact that most Charbonneau residents
were at the same stage in life as them: re- tired with grown kids.
Jerry joined the tennis club almost im-
mediately after moving to Charbonneau
and started taking weekly clinics from
coach Craig Koessler. The Charbonneau
Tennis Club was perfect for him: close to
home, year-round tennis, a good coach and
friendly, inviting members.
He volunteered to serve on the CTC
Board because he liked to stay busy and
to be useful to the community. Since he
has an engineering background, he felt he
would be able to help the tennis club in
the areas of maintenance and contract
management which he is performing ex-
ceptionally well.
When not playing tennis, staying busy
is not a problem living in Charbonneau.
He is on the Charbonneau’s Asset Man-
agement Committee and also on the
Charbonneau Emergency Preparedness
and Public Safety Committee. He enjoys
skiing in the wintertime and he and his
wife provide daycare two days per week
for their very cute 10-month-old grand-

daughter. He would like to relearn golf
but available time is scarce.
Jerry spent the bulk of his career in the
cellular telephone industry. He was vice
president of engineering and operations
for four different cellphone companies
who were all eventually purchased by ei-
ther AT&T Wireless or Verizon Wireless.
Four of those years were spent working
international markets. He indicates that it
was a fun ride.
