THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 17 October 2019 Charbonneau Arts Association By ERIC HOEM Meet a member and volunteer and become one yourself! Most of you know Cathi McLain as a golfer and the leader of CWGA. Her friends and acquaintances also know her also as an artist finding new life in a second career. And yes, Cathi has now stepped forward as a Communi- cations Committee volunteer for the Charbonneau Arts Association. In many ways Cathi McLain typifies the qualities that make artistic endeav- ors special here in Charbonneau: retire- ment after a successful career, golfing a lot, volunteering, and finding a second career direction taking art classes. Finding out about Cathi’s career made a strong impact on me, and even in sum- mary form it is very impressive. After graduating from California State Univer- sity at Long Beach, Cathi pursued a ca- reer in food marketing and public rela- Constance S . Later in Oregon, Cathi turned her skills to consulting in the area of market- ing for various agricultural products, and then her career next took her to the Ore- gon Department of Agriculture’s Agricul- tural Development and Marketing Divi- sion where she served as North Ameri- can Marketing Manager (US, Canada, Mexico). In that position she helped build Oregon’s Farmers Markets, which grew from 10 to over 50 during her tenure. The next stop on Cathi’s career jour- ney was serving as Executive Director of Consumer Trends International (CT- FI), a national non-profit organization she helped establish. Her work earned her recognition as the National Busi- ness Home Economist of the Year award in 1998. Cathi retired in 2009. Cathi and John moved to Charbon- neau from Lake Oswego in November of 2013. Cathi says of this move, “When we moved to Charbonneau, we knew we were buying into a lifestyle commu- nity, and not just a house. I have loved living here, making friends and being part of a network that extends beyond just a neighborhood.” Cathi’s love of golf got her involved with CWGA, where she has served as Publicity Chair, as a member of its board of directors, and this year as president of the organization. Something more unexpected happened after retirement. Cathi rediscovered her Interest in art. Her first watercolor efforts came in March 2017 while on vacation in Hawaii. She then took online classes and by the fall of that year was enrolled in Elaine Luneke’s watercolor classes both here in Charbonneau and at the Wilson- ville Community Center. As Cathi explains,” My active inter- est in art is relatively recent. I’ve al- ways enjoyed drawing, and took re- quired basic art classes in college, nev- er dreaming that I would have a talent for painting.” Since coming to Charbon- neau, Cathi has found opportunities to develop her talent. Cathi credits her development as an artist to watercolor teacher Elaine Luneke. “I enjoy her approach and the variety of techniques she introduces throughout the year. I also like the cama- raderie with other artists, and the friend- ships I have developed with them.” Cathi continues, “As I evolve as an See ARTS ASSOCIATION / Page 18 Residential Decks • New or Replacement • Cover cracked or damaged concrete patios • Multiple options for long life, easy care aluminum railing (Pickets, Glass or Cable, Infill) Specialize in using "Trex" composite decking and trim. #1 composite decking with a 25 year warranty.
