Thankfulness is
always helpful
HARKER
Our October lun-
cheon program
was by Patrick
Harris, who has
been the executive
director and cura-
tor of the Aurora
November 2019
Colony Historical Society for
over 25 years. The program ti-
tled “The Forty Eighters” talked
about the initial wave of settlers
in our area, just ahead of the
“Forty Niners” involved with the
Gold Rush in California. The
year 1847 was marked by major
American emigration across the
Oregon Trail; without that our
fine state would not be the same.
We can be thankful on a local
and more global level for the set-
tlers who helped make the Pacif-
ic Northwest what it is today.
We continue our gratitude to
our pioneer beginnings on a more
personal level in this month of No-
vember. Back by popular demand,
Lynne McKee will be featured at
our November luncheon speaking
to us about “Cowgirls and Ranch
Women: Pioneers Pushing Gender
Boundaries.” Lynne spoke at a
previous CWA luncheon on the
topic of stolen art and her work
with the FBI’s Art Crime Team.
This time she will be sharing sto-
ries about cowgirls who appeared
on the American frontier in the
mid-1800s. During a time when
women were expected to act lady-
like, sew, serve tea in the parlor,
and care for their husbands and
families, cowgirls lived on the
fringes of society, working stock
alongside the cowboys, competing
in rodeo. They were determined
and spirited pioneers; our current
generation’s women can certainly
be thankful for their nudging of
the boundaries.
Luncheon sign-up policy
Your board has discussed the is-
sue of late sign-ups for the lun-
cheons and after thorough discus-
sion it was decided that anyone
who signs up after noon on the
Thursday before the event will be
placed on a waiting list. Our trea-
surer Lindy Anderson graciously
offered to take phone reservations
for members that are out of town
and cannot possibly bring in their
checks prior to noon on Thursday,
but she will need to get the phone
reservation prior to the noon dead-
line. Please note that for our two
most popular events, the Christ-
mas Brunch and the May Fashion
Show, the sign-up deadlines are
typically earlier and both these
events usually sell out quickly.
Golf club, water company updates
By CHRIS BENSEL
As fall comes closer and we
near the end of the irrigation
season, we would like to recap
the productive summer we
have had at Charbonneau Golf
Club and Charbonneau Water
Company.
The Golf club took on and
finished the installation of the 27
new irrigation controllers, this
was a major upgrade from more
than 20-year-old controllers that
we have been able to limp
through with for the last few
years. For the first time this will
give the golf club the ability to
water appropriately across the
entire property.
By controlling individual
heads, we will be able to reduce
many of the dormant brown
spots as well as be able to reduce
many of the overwatered wet
spots seen throughout the
course.
The CWC reconditioned nine
irrigation pumps, installed two
new self-cleaning intake valves
in the main lake, and lastly
installed a new communication
system with Vault Pump in
Louvonne.
All of this has been done to
improve the water quality that
Charbonneau Water Company
delivers to our customers.
New policy
This year we have tried to
restructure the handling of daily
irrigation issues associated with
homes that surround the golf
course. Through the years CWC
staff have been inundated with
many calls that are HOA/
residential issues that do
not involve the CWC and or
CGC.
With that said, we have
started and would like to
continue with the policy that
asks all homeowners to contact
their respective landscape chairs
first.
If the landscape chairs needs
to reach CWC or CGC after they
have researched the situation,
they will contact the CWC/CGC
directly.
Happy Thanksgiving!
