Charbonneau shakes out
By SANDY BATTE
Did you Drop! Cover! And Hold
on! at 10:17 a.m. on Oct. 17? More
than 476 Charbonneau homes partic-
ipated in the Great Oregon Shake-
Out drill that Thursday morning.
This represents 37% of our commu-
nity, a 101% increase over last year.
The Great Oregon ShakeOut, held
on the third Thursday in October, is
an annual opportunity to practice
how to be safer during big earth-
quakes. Why is it important to do a
Drop, Cover, and Hold On drill? To
react quickly you must practice of-
ten. You may only have seconds to
protect yourself in an earthquake,
before strong shaking knocks you
down, or drops something on you.
Practicing helps you be ready to re-
spond. The ShakeOut also encour-
ages us to review and update emer-
gency preparedness plans and sup-
plies. (Do you know where your gas
shutoff valve is?)
Charbonneau’s HOA captains dis-
tributed fliers and HELP/OK signs
throughout the community. Every-
one who participated was given a
free raffle ticket and prizes of First-
Aid kits were awarded in every
HOA taking part in the drill. Special
accolades go to CHOA, CVCOA,
Country Club Estates, Edgewater
and French Prairie Village Condos
for more than doubling their num-
ber of participants this year vs. last
year. Great job!
Volunteers staffed a radio com-
mand post at the clubhouse and es-
tablished communications with
HOAs. This will be a vital connec-
tion when the “Big One” hits. It will
provide a way for the community to
access our overall welfare and to di-
rect our medically trained residents
to areas where they may be able to
provide some first-aid.
This important annual drill is just
one part of the efforts Charbonneau
Country Club makes toward main-
taining a safe, resilient, cohesive
community. The Emergency Pre-
paredness/Public Safety Committee
supports the efforts of the individu-
al HOAs by holding safety and radio
training clinics, providing informa-
tional packets to every household in
the community and maintaining
communications with city, county
and state disaster agencies. If you
would like to be a part of this impor-
tant work, please contact Karen at
the clubhouse via email at Karen@
