18 THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER December 2019 anytime if there are issues you feel are important to you. You matter. I have a total open door policy and un- til I hear both sides, I’m neutral. Rich4748@outlook. com. Civic Affairs By WAYNE RICHARDS I’m Wayne Richards and a Charbonneau resident. I was asked in September if I would chair the Civic Affairs Commit- tee. I think the position really matters because my main goal is protecting our unique and RICHARDS wonderful lifestyle and our health and safety. The position is a part of that. We keep watch on legislation written in Salem, statewide agencies, elected officials, and all things that come our way that can have a positive or negative effect on our community. I’m a graduate of Lake Oswego High School class of ‘66, and Portland State University. I’m a retired financial planner. One example of a pressing issue is the airport extension. I just re- turned from Sun River where the Oregon Aviation Board had their final meeting regarding the Aurora runway exten- sion. No one that I’ve talked to is against the air- port or pilots. I was a Birddog pilot in Vietnam. I love planes. The issue has always been lack of proper process. For example, a master plan requires State Agency Co- ordination. We asked nicely for many years to see the Department of Transportation’s oversite and conclu- sions. It’s the same for the Department of Agriculture, Department of Environmental Quality. No documents anywhere. However the OAB decided to create their own findings and contend they fulfill State Agency Co- ordination requirements! Where are the state agency write-ups? Since no one on the Board read them (be- cause they don’t exist) it just seems, to our citizens, that voting to approve something that’s not there is, well, maybe a flaw? The Board then decided by amend- ment to approve the 2012 Master Plan. And by the way, they contend that Clackamas County and Wilsonville are not affected. A day in the life. Please let me know ➤ Canby’s Premier Location for Family Fitness Error in Villager raises issues about Aurora Airport An unfortunate mistake in the November 2019 Villag- er attributed an opinion piece “The Aurora Airport ‘ex- pansion’” incorrectly to Chris Bensel. To set the record straight, Chris Bensel was not the author of this opinion piece. The true author was airport expansion advocate, Aurora Aviation owner and expansion beneficiary Bruce Bennett. This was an error on the part of the Pamplin Publications staff, who are now publishing the Charbon- neau Villager, under an agreement with the Country Club. Charbonneau residents have taken a ‘masters class’ on the history, public policy and legal aspects of the Aurora Airport expansion. Charbonneau residents op- pose the Aurora Airport runway expansion for good reasons: quality of life perspective (overflights, noise, surface traffic congestion, safety) and the likely ef- fects on their property values that an industrialized, expanded Aurora Airport brings. Our Civic Affairs Committee has repeatedly stated their position clearly: we do not support the ‘charm of- fensive’ by those wishing to profit through a runway extension or airport expansion, nor any policy or ac- tion which would bring more multi-windowed jets to the Aurora Airport. One important theme of this two decades long con- flict between airport developers and Charbonneau residents has been a disregard of fair public process and transparency in pursuit of private profits by air- port owners over the interests of Charbonneau resi- dents. Bruce Bennett has had articles in the Charbon- neau Villager in October and infamously in the No- vember issue. We have heard enough ‘PR messaging’ from this special interest! A simple correction here is a good start, and apolo- gies to those who may have been harmed by this mis- take. Looking forward to more debate on the airport issue in clear public view with verifiable facts, not by subterfuge, misidentification and obfuscation of known facts.
