THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 17
December 2019
Charbonneau
Men’s Club
By JOHN MCLAIN
Club always expresses their thanks
by contributing a year end gift in
the Christmas stockings of the Golf
Club staff who work so hard to keep
the Pro Shop and Turn open, and
the greens and fairways in good
shape.
Thankful for the gift
of golf December is also the month of
gifts. Defi nitions of “gift” are:
It will official-
ly be winter
when this article
gets published.
Most of our
members play
golf in the win-
ter. Many in the
MCLAIN
usually sunny
warm climates in
the southern states, while some
play here in the unpredictable wet
cold climate of the Northwest. I am
thankful that Charbonneau is one of
the few courses that are more play-
able than most in the winter
months. While the red course is
closed, the yellow and green cours-
es are open year around. The Men’s I’m sure we all look forward to a
few presents under the tree this year,
and some just might be related to golf;
winter golf gloves, electric heated
socks and perhaps a shoe dryer. I
must admit that I’ve already ordered
myself a gift from the Pro Shop with
my store credits; a new Taylormade 3
hybrid, the perfect club for Charbon-
neau. And my wife is hinting for a new
golf bag; which she deserves. In a
way, it is a gift to me that my wife
loves to play golf, and we pack our
golf clubs wherever we travel. Yes, I
am thankful for the gift of golf in
whatever way it comes to me. As for
the gift of “natural ability or talent,”
I’m thankful to have enough to get me
■ A thing given willingly to someone
without payment; a present
■ A natural ability or talent
around the course, occasionally finish-
ing in the money (store credits). I’m
also thankful for the gift of good
health, at least good enough to play a
round with family and friends. Just as
many of our members, I am a cancer
survivor, had surgery to increase mo-
bility, and hope to be playing golf for a
long, long, time. I sincerely wish you
all will receive the gifts of golf this
winter season; good health, good
friends, and a few good rounds too.
Board and Committees don’t get
the winter off
Wintertime is a busy season for the
Men’s Club Board. At the November
meeting, some directors will end their
terms, retiring from the Board. I am
thankful for Paul Newman and John
Meyers who have contributed much
over the past three years. For the
coming year, there are five new mem-
bers joining the Board of Directors:
Don Mason, Steve Werts, Zia Yamay-
ee, Ford Morishita, and Glen Fergu-
son. I am thankful for Laurin Larson,
who decided to stay on the Board and
serve another three-year term. These
men are gifted with talents (golf and
more). The next time you see them, let
them know you are thankful for their
willingness to volunteer.
The November board meeting agen-
da includes the election of officers
(president, VP, treasurer, and secre-
tary) as well as the appointment of di-
rectors to be the chairman several im-
portant committees and roles on be-
half of the Board. These include:
■ Interclub Cooperation Committee
■ Treasury/Finance Committee
■ Tournaments Committee and sub-
committees
■ Games Definitions and Selection
■ Scheduling events and play days
■ Payouts & Points
■ Scoring & Posting
■ Nine Hole Division
Committee
■ Publicity & Communications Commit-

of life, you must smell the
roses, for you only get to play
one round.” - Ben Hogan

lots of roses.” - John McLain.
