They also suggested that lawyers remain abreast of changes to their local bar ' s conduct rules . In case you were not aware , the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct were recently updated . Rules 1.6 ( Confidentiality ) and 1.15 ( III ) ( Trust Account Overdraft Notification ) were amended while the Georgia Supreme Court adopted Rule 1.18 regarding duties to prospective clients . So , You think You Can Do That , Huh ? Navigating Local Government by Homeowners
Christopher D . Balch ( Balch Law Group ) was joined by panelists R . Kyle Williams ( Williams Teusink ) and Assistant City Manager of Brookhaven Patrice Ruffin to discuss the common pitfalls and challenges homeowners may face when attempting to build a new home , modify their existing home , or handle disputes with neighbors . The panel begin with a general discussion on understanding the land use and development processes . When a property owner wants to use their property in ways outside of their zoning classification , owners must apply for a change in zoning classification ( rezoning ). Property owners can also obtain a special land use permit for property use incompatibility . Making sure you have the proper permits before construction or modification occurs can save you a lot of money and time and can help ensure that the property will meet the local code requirements . The panelists reminded attendees that they should be asking local government staff general land-use questions when interacting with the city or municipality . Ruffin and Williams also reminded attendees that every jurisdiction is different , and it is best to ask questions early in the process . It is also recommended to get everything in writing and provide as much information as possible when interacting with a jurisdiction .
