Chaing Mai Overview
Chiang Mai, also known as “New City”, is the largest and most
culturally significant city in Northern Thailand. It is the capital Chiang
Mai province. 700 km
(435 mi) north of Bangkok,
Chiang Mai is situated
amongst the highest
mountains in the country. The
city is along the Ping River, a
major branch of the Chao
Phraya River.
Chiang Mai is a
religious city that has over
300 buddhist temples all
around the region. The
Ancient architecture, festivals,
distant mountains, waterfalls,
exciting cuisine and remote
villages created a historical
silhouette in the New City.
The inhabitants speak Kham Muang (also known as Northern Thai or
Lanna) among themselves, though central Thai is used in education
and is understood by almost everyone.
There is so much to see and do in the city of Chiang Mai. With all
that it has to offer, a two week vacation won’t even be enough to go
through everything in the city. Indigenous markets, hot springs,
museums, limestone caves, boat river rides, night bazaars, national
parks, the Royal Palace, silversmith and silk factories, elephant riding,
cookery schools, night safaris, jungle trekking, and much more to do in
Chiang Mai.
