What Is Week Without Walls?
Every year, grades
sixth through twelve
travel elsewhere
and experience a
whole week beyond
classroom walls.
During the school
trips, we are
educated about
encountering new
activities, being
independent, and to
bond with people
we don’t find at
ease with. Week
Without Walls let you undergo adventures that you wouldn’t normally do.
For example, we got to try new things that we’ve never done before.
Without these annual trips, we wouldn’t know what zip lining felt like, or
how to kayak. It’s not just about life outside of classroom walls; it’s how
to survive it. For this year’s week without walls, the 8th grade went to
Chiang Mai, Thailand, which was the first middle school trip that was
outside of Myanmar. The 8th grade of International School Yangon stayed
at the PREM Tinsulda International School. The instructors there were also
very generous and befriended us. Personally, I got along with some of the
classmates that I didn’t normally interact with. One of my roommates was
someone that I didn’t really encounter on a daily basis, but during the trip,
we bonded so well and I talk to her everyday now. Week Without Walls not
only builds friendship, but builds teamwork as well. The activities that we
had to do only made us stronger as a team. For example, kayaking
required teamwork so that we could make the kayak move. It required two
people to turn the boat around and move backward as well. Hence, the
whole concept of Week Without Walls is to bond friendships, let students
try new activities, and educate students about being independent and life
behind the classroom walls. Personally, I believe Week Without Walls is a
good experience for kids as they will have to learn to be independent and
should be educated about things over the classroom walls.
