“ Working in multiple supply chains , often with larger , global companies , means we are often required to demonstrate our sustainability strategy and plans to achieve our net zero targets . We ’ re seeing more and more companies now requiring sight of our environmental strategy , even at the beginning of the tender stage .
“ A main part of my role is to map out this journey and to explore what we can do realistically , without over-committing , factoring in what investment the business will need to undertake and the timeframes of when we can meet targets .
“ Our ESG strategy clearly defines our priorities regarding environmental , social and governance aspects .
“ We realise it won ’ t be an easy challenge to reach our net zero targets , but we know there are many initiatives we can be doing to contribute positively to achieving these targets .
“ For example , look at our road haulage subsidiary , AV Dawson Transport . The team is working hard to find ways and means to support the sustainability strategy by exploring new alternative fuels for their trucks .
“ They have recently undertaken a trial of trucks fuelled by compressed natural gas ( CNG ). These trucks will decrease our carbon footprint for the transport company by 90 %, which will have a significant impact on the outputs for the company .
“ Port of Middlesbrough is investigating how it can electrify its quayside to provide shore power for visiting vessels .
“ There are so many positive advancements driving forward our environmental strategy . It really is an exciting time . The company recognises that ESG extends far beyond environmental ambitions . The social and governance aspects of the ESG strategy are equally important .”
