teachers teach and students learn. The introduction of cloud based apps, virtual / mixed reality and affordable 1:1 devices, expands the possibilities far beyond the traditional approach of linear, text based learning. Through technology, St Chris is able to provide deeper learning and fully immersive experiences for its students.
Teaching and Learning
Teaching at St Chris, has long shifted from writing on whiteboards, to creating a more captivating learning experience for the students. With the introduction of cloud-based software, staff and students are able to work together more seamlessly. Teachers can easily share and interact across all student devices. The use of video in teaching and learning at St Chris, allows students to repeat, rewind and revisit content at their own pace, whilst the use of subject specific apps provide engaging content and flexible learning. Recently, the school has embarked on a project using virtual reality to transport students to almost anywhere in the world. From the comfort of their classrooms, the students visit museums, go under the ocean, walk on the surface of Mars, see inside the human body and even go back in time. The 360 immersive experience is a powerful medium to engage and deepen the students’ learning.
Developing 21st Century Skills
By working in the cloud, St Christopher’ s school benefits from a
21st Century approach, towards the creation and distribution of content. Technology is used to help the students to develop the 4C’ s( Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Creativity), the essential skills required to be future-ready in the workforce. The teachers are able to comment on and edit students’ work in realtime, which has helped to transform the students, from passive consumers of content, to being active content creators. Students and teachers are able to publish their work on the Internet, reach authentic audiences and gain valuable feedback.
Assessment & Feedback
Technology plays a key role in improving the effectiveness of assessment and student feedback at St Christopher’ s school. The digital tools used are extremely powerful in supporting teachers in checking for students’ understanding and providing real-time assessment. Prior to the use of these tools, the burden of paper-based marking and handwritten comments were barriers to providing timely feedback. The teachers and students now benefit from using online forms to capture students’ responses, as well as the use of gamification apps as part of the learning experience. Due to the automation capability of such technologies, students receive instant feedback and teachers receive powerful analytics regarding the understanding of the learners. As a result, teachers are able to use their time in the classroom, more
