Instructional Materials
Don’t Make A Million Dollar Mistake
Room:
Presenter(s):
352C
Jackie Lain | Learning List
Matt Tyner | Dallas ISD
Instructional materials purchases are generally the largest annual
purchases school districts make. Often, districts have too many
products to review and too little time to review them carefully.
Research has shown that only 54% of the instructional materials
that claim to be 100% aligned actually are. For that reason alone,
districts, on average, have half a million dollars worth of unused
instructional materials. Does yours? Presenters will engage participants in a discussion about effective practices to help districts
stretch their IMA funds and avoid purchasing materials that
ultimately go unused.

Case Study: Cy-Fair ISD’s 2020 Vision LongRange Planning Process
Room:
Presenter(s):

Todd Spore | PBK
Roy Sprague | Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D.
As a part of Cy-Fair ISD’s 2020 Vision Long-Range Planning Process, a comprehensive Facilities Assessment Project was initiated
in October 2013 in order to examine and document the existing
condition of all district facilities as well to evaluate safety and
security, technology, and transportation needs. Led by a multifirm team comprised of CFISD representatives, architects and
engineers, this massive, fast-track project, encompassing 111 facilities, more than 5 million sq. ft. and approximately 2,100 acres
was completed in 2.5 months and provided the foundation for the
2020 Vision Long-Range Planning endeavor. In this session, we’ll
discuss the process, results, and outcomes.
End Time: 12:30 pm

contemplating which construction delivery (contracting) method(s)
to use? This session will examine the delivery methods allowed
per statute, identify the pros and cons of each method, suggest
which projects are better served by the various methods, and
comment on market conditions that can affect your choice of
method. Districts that have not had major new construction or

leverage their project in the market as well as understand how to
select the best construction delivery method(s).
