What tamit has been up to

SPRING 2013

(TABLET HUNT) After a considerable amount of research, TAMIT took the month of March to test various interactive platforms for our students, finally deciding on the Microsoft Tablet for its versatility, price point and the resources Microsoft was willing to donate. TAMIT entered into a partnership with Microsoft that allowed for at least six free workshops a year teaching about any of the Microsoft products in detail, including training on Office, film editing and game design.

(TABLET LAUNCH) Twenty-one Tablets were handed to students at our first official Microsoft event. A blessing was held to kick off the event. Each student received a Windows Surface RT, case, cover, keyboard, and hotspot. Quechan singers celebrated the event sharing lightning songs with the students over Skype.

(COLLEGE TRANSITIONS) In mid-May, TAMIT students were invited to a weekend workshop that helped seniors fill out financial aid and juniors took their first steps towards writing college essays. Our seniors took their next step on the path to college.

(TITLE VII GRADUATION) All of our 4 graduating students attended the Title VII Graduation at the Autry Museum, receiving an beaded tassle for their graduation cap and a scholarship.

Summer 2013

(SUMMER ACADEMY) In late July to early August, TAMIT held its second Summer Academy, set in the Angeles Crest Mountains at Haramokngna American Indian Cultural Center. Expanding out from a five-day camp to seven days, our schedule included more priceless cultural activities, challenging college level academics, visits from community members, hikes and physical activities.

(UNITY CONFERENCE) The Unity Conference is an annual, youth-run national conference that this year was hosted at the Marriott Hotel in Woodland Hills. Students got to participate in three days of it, including the opening ceremonies, a number of workshops, and the awards ceremony. The TAMIT even met the famous 1491s, a Native comedy group.
