Brooke Helgesen( right) and Sami Woodcock represented Special Olympics Maine during
Capitol Hill Days in Washington, DC, in February.
Brooke spoke with the four Congressional delegates from Maine, advocating for individuals with developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and autism. She asked for their support with funding for Unified Champion Schools, like Thornton Academy, and health programming.“ We left the Capitol knowing we gained their support and our Congressional members plan on signing the Dear Colleague letters( showing support for Special Olympics),” says Sarah Helgesen from our Special Education team( pictured with Brooke and Sami).
Sam Drummey was selected as one of Maine’ s two delegates for the US Senate Youth Program.
This prestigious honor includes a $ 10,000 scholarship and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington DC, where he heard major policy addresses by senators, cabinet members, officials of the Departments of State and Defense, leaders of other federal agencies and senior members of the national media.
Delegates also traditionally participate in a meeting with a justice of the U. S. Supreme Court and the president of the United States. Most speaking events include in-depth question and answer sessions.
Sam, a senior, plans to major in political science and economics at Columbia University.
