CAMBRIDGE OPEN ARCHIVES 2022 :

Opening Our Virtual Doors to the Public

First organized by the Cambridge Historical Commission in 2009 , the Cambridge Open Archives , sometimes called the Cambridge archives crawl , is an annual free event that offers members of the public the rare opportunity to visit unique archives throughout the city . In the years before the COVID-19 pandemic , archivists would set up displays of special collections materials — such as historic photographs , artwork , maps , and ephemera — and would be on hand to tell stories and answer questions . This year , instead of opening our doors to the public , we opened our virtual doors to the public via Instagram Live ! Curator Meg Winslow invited the virtual public into the vault to delve into records of the dead and see examples of ephemera generated by the 19thcentury popularity of Mount Auburn . This year ’ s participating repositories included Cambridge Historical Commission , Astronomical Photographic Glass Plate Collection of Harvard University , Longfellow House – Washington ’ s Headquarters National Historic Site , Cambridge Public Library Archives and Special Collections , Mount Auburn Cemetery , and History Cambridge .
