SOUTHAMPTON SOLENT UNIVERSITY 1654 – Finance Department Structure
There had already been some restructuring of the Finance Department in response to the introduction of new systems and natural staff turnover. The University had also restructured from three Faculties to six Schools with associated reorganisation of administration staff. We undertook an in-depth evaluation of whether the existing organisational structure of the Finance Department would be appropriate for future needs, to determine the optimal structure to support the delivery of the University’ s new and challenging strategy. We were able to put forward recommendations to help optimise the structure, from which cost savings would arise.
UNIVERSITY OF SURREY 1689 – Support for Timetabling
SUMS worked with and helped the Surrey team analyse their space audit data. We then benchmarked the data, along with the timeline for the timetable preparation, against peer universities. The work informed Estate space planning.
1707 – Review of Student Appointment System
The University of Surrey wanted to understand from internal stakeholders their current and future needs relating to the management of student appointments. This included where and how student appointments were managed and the systems used to support this work. SUMS undertook the internal analysis and followed this up with a number of comparator studies to find out how they supported this work and the systems they were using.
It became clear that a large number of institutions had earmarked this area of work for review and a plethora of different systems were being used. No single model of best practice emerged: most recognised that there was more work to be done in this area.
