1688 – Review of the International Office
SUMS was asked by the University of Hull to undertake a review of the structure, effectiveness and
performance of its International Office to inform proposals for the future operation of international
student recruitment and welfare activities.
The review highlighted a concentration on student recruitment activities within the International Office
with limited resources devoted to broader aspects of internationalisation of the University. The review also
highlighted activities being undertaken within the International Office where there were opportunities to
align with wider University professional leadership and specialist skills.
SUMS looked at current practice in other universities and identified a pattern in which international offices
are increasing their concentration on core activities that require their specialist knowledge of overseas
markets, to optimise their effectiveness.
SUMS recommended that the International Office at Hull should focus its activities on international
recruitment and the identification and development of international partnerships and collaborations.
SUMS also recommended the establishment of KPIs to reinforce this focus to help support
the achievement of the University’s international strategic objectives.
The review provided an opportunity for the University to reconsider and clarify the wider internationalisation
objectives. At the wider strategic level, SUMS recommended that the University should develop an
Internationalisation Strategy and establish an International Advisory Group.
