UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL
1663 – Comparative Study of Communications and Marketing Support
SUMS was asked to collect information on the structures and resourcing of marketing and communications
functions in comparator universities, to inform the development of proposals within the University of Bristol
for the future size and shape of its own department. Comparators were selected from within the Russell
Group, on the basis of their profile in a number of key areas of activity (research, teaching, outreach). We
found there is no single common model in place for the provision of marketing and communications support,
even in reasonably comparable institutions. There are significant differences both in the range of professional
services offered by central departments and in the extent to which academic units have their own marcomms
resources which are staffed locally.
1686 – Student Hub – Options Paper
This assignment provided an overview of sector developments in the area of providing information, advice
and guidance to students. It noted the drivers for Bristol, provided an overview of the “as is” service delivery
model and three models for the future delivery of “Hub” services. Each model was evaluated in terms of
benefits and risks in the context of the University. This development was considered in the context of a
number of other major initiatives.
