Photo by Charles DeMakis New SBAND President Charles DeMakis...continued How have you been involved in community service outside of your legal career? As an undergraduate and member of Delta Tau Delta at UND, I was involved in a number of community service projects. Early in my practice, I would travel to Kenmare and became involved in their Lions Club. Currently, my focus has been on serving SBAND and I have not been able to spend my time on other activities, but I plan on picking that up again when I have finished my service with the Board. What do you do for fun? The outdoors is a big part of my leisure time. I have been hunting and fishing since I was twelve, and I started going with my father and grandfather when I was as young as ten. In the fall, I try and get in the field for pheasants as much as possible. Nothing is better than watching my lab, Gauge, work a field and flush a rooster. I have done numerous big game hunts for moose, caribou, bear, and deer. This fall, I will be hunting deer in Kansas and elk in Oregon. I love fishing Lake Sakakawea for walleyes with my boys. I have fished Alaska since high school and it is one of my favorite places to go. 8 THE GAVEL Hockey is a major part of our family. My wife and I have traveled to Denver and Boston for the Frozen Four and made a road trip this past winter to Denver with our boys to watch UND. We make a few trips a year to watch UND at The Ralph. Both our boys are Chicago Blackhawks fans, and we’ve been able to see them live in St. Paul against the Wild. I tend to live and die with the Dallas Cowboys and have enjoyed many trips to Dallas to watch them in person. A few seasons ago we took our boys, who are Vikings fans, to see Minnesota and Dallas play in Dallas. I was able to gain bragging rights as Dallas pulled out a win in the last minute of play. Lately, I have really taken an interest in photography. The landscape shot in this article I took and edited. It is very relaxing and fun trying to get a great shot of some of our amazing skies and wildlife. Do you have anything else you would like to add? I am looking forward to an exciting year as president of the association. I have been able to attend some fantastic programming this past year in preparation for my year as president, and I am excited to get started on some new things for our members and association.
