Pathfinder 3D

A guide to enjoyable hiking

Using a 2D map requires skills to interpret the information and create a mental picture of how the landscape actually looks. For inexperienced hikers who often overestimate their abilities and the family ' s enthusiasm for an adventurous hike, misreading map details can ruin the entire experience. Additionally, experienced hikers can plan an expedition and make safe decisions on the trail by using the maps. Still, visually sharing the route and its challenges with friends is part of the fun.
This cross-border case study employed advanced technologies to create a smart 3D map of hiking routes, showcased in Sweden, Norway, and Finland. The idea is similar to“ Google Street View," but in wilderness areas. Remaining technical challenges include, for example, Internet access in remote locations and adapting the solution to different hardware.
