nticipatory action
was a relevant theme during the seventh Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction held in Bali, Indonesia, in May 2022.
Due to the growing international recognition of the links between Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and anticipatory action, the Global Platform was an opportunity for stakeholders from both communities to interact.
Prior to the event, the Anticipation Hub, an initiative of the German Red Cross, the Climate Centre and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), issued a statement highlighting some strategies where the two communities can work together. For instance, by helping countries to achieve their targets in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.
On the other hand, representing the anticipation initiatives in the Americas, Jorge Arteaga, manager of essential areas of the Ecuadorian Red Cross, participated in the session "Anticipate and act early: placing communities and creativity at the center of learning and exchange" organized by the Hub, exposing some key points of the lessons learned during the activation of the Early Action Plan of the Ecuadorian Red Cross on the effects of the Sangay volcano ash in 2020. An experience that represents a milestone in anticipatory action in the Americas, being one of the first activations ahead of a complex hazard in a challenging context, as the activation happened in the midst of the restrictions associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.
