Anticipatory action for extreme droughts in Central America will be approached regionally

Central America are working on the design and implementation of mechanisms to anticipate extreme droughts. Unlike other climatic hazards, droughts have progressive effects of high impact on populations dedicated particularly to agriculture and livestock. Anticipatory mechanisms face a series of challenges connected to technical decisions and humanitarian action.
To strategically identify potential early actions, forecasts and activation mechanisms, the Central American workshop on anticipatory action ahead of droughts was held in February 2022.
Specialists from the Honduran Red Cross, Guatemalan Red Cross, Nicaraguan Red Cross, Costa Rican Red Cross and Salvadoran Red Cross participated in the event, as well as the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH), the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) of Guatemala and the Permanent Committee for Contingencies (COPECO) of Honduras.
The National Meteorological Institute of Costa Rica (IMN) also joined virtually. The event was supported by technical advisers from the German Red Cross and the Red Cross Red Crescent's Climate Centre.
