Drill on floods' anticipation tested the early

actions of the Costa Rican Red Cross

arrita, Puntarenas,

is a Costa Rican community historically affected by the impacts of floods associated with tropical storms.

As an initiative to anticipate potential extreme events, a simulation of the Costa Rican Red Cross' Early Action Plan for floods was carried out in Parrita, on January 2022.

The exercise tested the National Society's internal processes for the mobilization of resources to support the activation of the cash transfer program, as the early action prioritized.

The exercise also included the distribution of assistance within a two-day period.

The families involved, located in Bandera beach, received debit cards with $105 each, as part of the Red Cross approach to put people at the center of humanitarian aid.

Key actors such as the National Meteorological Institute (IMN) and the local municipality participated in the anticipation drill.

The Disaster Preparedness Reference Center (CREPD) of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) was also involved in the organization of this initiative, contributing with its experience as an advisor on preparedness issues.

Focal points and FbF coordinators of 8 National Societies of the Americas participated as observers in the process, to promote an exchange of practices that can be replicated in their national contexts .
